108 Sun Salutations 6pm Thursday, June 20th to celebrate the winter solstice

108 is a sacred number in yoga and 108 sun salutations are often completed at the time of the equinox to celebrate, sweat and transform.

Traditionally, malas (strings of prayer beads) come as a string of 108 beads (plus one for the “guru bead,” around which the other 108 beads turn like the planets around the sun)

It is a huge challenge to do the 108 but with the group energy, the Sun Salutations flow by as if on a wave of energy. If you don’t feel you can complete the whole 108 sun salutations – no worries – just bring along a friend or 2 to share the rounds. It means you don’t have to do so many but have just as much fun….

This is all about having some fun as a community, we hope to see you all there.

Please bring a yoga mat with you and a small towel and some water might be advisable.

Foundations of acrobatic and therapeutic “flying” yoga- 5-7pm

Queenstown is in for a special treat on the evening of ANZAC Day. Studio Sangha is proud to host International yoga teacher Trevor Gribble as we create a playful evening of partner-based Acroyoga.

Acroyoga is a CELEBRATION in fusion of traditional yoga with innovation in contemporary acrobatic movements wherein we experience divine harmony through presence and balance with another. In a safe and nurturing environment, we cultivate trust, confidence, loving kindness and playfulness through asana, strength conditioning, partner stretching, counterbalances, inversions, Thai massage elements and therapeutic flying, basing and spotting. Fitness and flexibility beyond beginner level is required i.e. ability to hold a properly aligned plank (top of a push-up) for at least 30 seconds without discomfort. Bringing a partner is unnecessary but welcome; there are plenty of us to play with!

The 2 hour class runs from 5-7PM on Thursday, April 25, ANZAC Day. Please encourage your yoga friends to come out and play with you on this wonderful day to celebrate community. $20 at the door

More information about Trevor available at his Facebook page: www.facebook.com/trevoryoga

Yoga Nidra is one of the deepest of all meditations, leading awareness through many levels of mental process to a state of supreme stillness and insight.

Yoga Nidra means Yogic Sleep. It is a state of conscious Deep Sleep. In Meditation, you remain in the Waking state of consciousness, and gently focus the mind, while allowing thought patterns, emotions, sensations, and images to arise and go on. However, in Yoga Nidra, you leave the Waking state, go past the Dreaming state, and go to Deep Sleep, yet remain awake. While Yoga Nidra is a state that is very relaxing, it is also used by Yogis to purify the Samskaras, the deep impressions that are the driving force behind Karma.

You will feel the flow of prana move through physical, emotional, and energetic blockages. The end result is the healing of the body and mind and the expansion of consciousness.

We will have an hour of Restorative yoga, half an hour Pranayama, followed by half an hour Yoga Nidra (led by certified Yoga Nidra teacher, Peggy Preston) Please bring a mat, we have blankets, bolsters and eye bag pillows at studio.

After Spinal fusion age 12, twice under the knife for shoulder repair, and recently 2 x crushed vertebra, I was still not keen to give up Iron distance triathlons and multisport events.

Chronic back pain, a touch of sciatica and persistent unstable shoulder, replaced the enjoyment of exercise with disappointment and frustration. Even the occasional anti-inflammatory was not doing the job anymore.

I will never forget my first Bikram class – confirmation that my body aged a bit quicker than I ever anticipated. Years of demanding best from my body without investing in “healing time” has finally caught up with me.

Although I could not execute all the postures there always seemed to be another challenge in the following class. With each session, improvement was obvious.

During week 2-3 the morning back stiffness was quickly disappearing. I was surprised to notice increase shoulder strength and stability. I could run without back pain and swim without having the all familiar night time shoulder ache and riding my bike for longer was more comfortable. My training became FUN again!

I expected increase flexibility but got so much more… – Increased cardiovascular fitness, strength, and no more joint or back pain. I expected Bikram Yoga to compliment my triathlon training – but for me it’s now a core element of training and healthy living.

As a medical doctor with special interest in sports medicine it is obvious that flexibility prevents injury. But I was truly surprised at the potential to reverse chronic pain from old injuries and degenerative joint disease. And all of this whilst getting fit as well! Seems too good to be true? You up for the Challenge? You Will not be disappointed.
